Stop Waxing and Start Threading

2

I started plucking my eyebrows in middle school. I learned about tweezing from watching my sisters, although mine never turned out that well. I tweezed them to death and they ended up looking like Pamela Anderson’s. Thin and unsightly to say the least – not very pretty for an 11-year-old.

“There’s nothing more ugly than over-plucked eyebrows. Thin and extremely high arched brows make you look older – not younger.”

Pamela Anderson's emaciated eyebrows are a NO-NO. Do this if you want to appear 10 years older.

At the time, I thought my thin eyebrows made me look great, but then things changed. Thick eyebrows became popular, and so I kissed my tweezers goodbye and handed them over to the professionals. My sister Michelle introduced me to waxing, but that turned out to be a disaster. I walked out with a rash and bumps all over my brows – needless to say, I never waxed them again.

Fast forward a few years later, and I’m here in London. Eyebrow shaping took a whole different meaning after moving here – especially with the “threading” craze.  My former skin therapist recommended I try threading after I complimented her perfectly arched brows.

Eyebrows by Blink

Soon after, I hunted all over London for the best threading place. Sadly, I walked out with badly butchered brows from many places claiming to provide phenomenal “threading” services. Never trust places offering cheap and affordable brow shaping. I wasted so much time letting my brows grow out again – not to mention money.  Not every therapist knows what they’re doing.

I then went to the best place in London. Blink Brow Bar is the best place to get your eyebrows shaped. Trust me, I know! Yes, £17 is pricey, but there you’ll find real experts who know what they’re doing – not amateurs.

“Doing for brows what walk-in nail bars have done for manicures, Blink has cleverly made the art of brow sculpting accessible to everyone. Whichever Blink brow bar we go to, no matter which therapist we see, we unfailingly get the perfect shape every time.”

Blink Brow Bar at Fenwick Department Store

I walk into Fenwick at Brent Cross and spot Blink. A friendly lady greets me with a smile and tells me she has a few openings in the afternoon. I think, “I might as well pay the £17. If Bazaar magazine swears by this place, I know I’m going to walk out with the perfect looking brows I’ve EVER had.”

I sit down on a dentist style recliner and tell her what I want: “I want to keep my eyebrows thick and with a nice arch.” She hands me a mirror and explains how she’s going to shape my brows – drawing a line with a white pencil.

She then takes out a normal cotton thread and puts it between her fingers and teeth – weaving it over my skin and extracting my hair. Next, she trims my brows and finishes me off with a relaxing head massage. 15 minutes later I’m showing my husband my perfectly arched brows. He tells me, “Wow, they look beautiful. They’re good! Money worth spent!”

No redness, no pain, no bumps, no chemicals, and certainly no mismatched ugly brows! A bonus is the results last for several weeks! I leave a happy client and will never go anywhere else in London.  I must thank the Middle East for bringing this concept to the western world.

Next on my list… Find a way to get my husband to try it out!  🙂

Delicious RAW Mushroom Soup

Mushroom Soup - Vegan Style

How many of you love drinking soups? I absolutely adore them, especially in the winter. Well, as some of you may know, I’ve been following a raw food diet for a few years now.  What’s that? It means eating uncooked food – so lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, and avocados.  90% of my diet consists of raw food and the rest consists of quinoa, sweet potatoes, brown rice, so forth.

Anyway, I’m not here to speak about my diet. What I wanted to share with you is this delicious soup recipe that I just made. What’s best about it is that it’s 100% RAW – meaning you can drink it even in the hot summer months. It doesn’t taste bad cold either.

This soup is called “Mycology Cream of Shiitake Soup” by raw foodist extraordinaire Matt Amsden. This guy is a genius when it comes to preparing tasty raw dishes. He makes his recipes very interesting and delicious that junk food lovers won’t spit out his stuff.

Here’s the recipe:

Serves 2 to 3

A thick blend of shiitake mushrooms and fresh vegetables creamed with almond milk.

  • 3 cups almond milk (see note)
  • 2 cups shiitake mushroom caps, plus a few for garnish
  • 3 stalks celery
  • 4 cloves of garlic, peeled
  • 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt
Combine all of the ingredients and blend until smooth. Pour into a serving bowl. Using a ladle, remove and discard any foam that rises to the top. Garnish with the mushroom (see below).
GARNISH:
Thinly sliced shiitake mushrooms marinated for approximately 1 minute in Nama Shoyu.
Note:
To make almond milk, combine 1 cup of almonds with 3 1/2 cups of pure water in a blender, blend until smooth, and strain through a nut milk bag.
Matt Amsden has established himself as one of the world’s premier raw chefs. Matt’s company RAWvolution was the first of its kind, delivering prepared raw meals in Los Angeles and eventually throughout the entire United States. Matt has shared his talent with thousands including Alicia Silverstone, Cher, Susan Sarandon and super-model Carol Alt.

Number One Acne Killer

4

Everyone hates pimples, and I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of wasting my time and money on acne remedies that don’t work. Now I’ve found the most effective zit killer. Meet Mr Hydrogen Peroxide. This guy kills acne faster and better. This deadly acne assassin eliminates acne causing bacteria in no time by blasting it with oxygen.

I developed problem skin after stopping a birth control pill from hell called Dianette. It wrecked havoc on my hormones and gave me unwanted spots. That’s when I began researching acne cures, and believe me, I tried EVERYTHING – even putting raw garlic on my pimples.

I started using hydrogen peroxide and haven’t looked back. Thankfully, my blemished skin days are a distant memory. Thanks to Mr Hydrogen Peroxide and a DAIRY-free diet, I now rarely get spots.

Peroxide rocks because it’s cheap and best of all, it contains no harmful toxic chemicals. You won’t experience any horrific side effects – like those associated with Accutane.

HOW DO I USE IT?

1. Wash your face and make sure it’s clean.

2. When your face is dry, take a cotton pad and wet it with hydrogen peroxide. Never use a 10% or higher solution as it can burn your skin.

3. Apply the cotton pad on the infected area. Let it sit on the skin for a few minutes. Rinse off.

4. Apply a toner and moisturizer afterwards to combat the drying caused by the peroxide.

TIPS:

1. Don’t get it on your eyebrows, hair and around the eyes. Mr Hydrogen Peroxide’s trademark is leaving a blondish orange tint, so don’t get it on your hair – unless of course you want it bleached.

2. You can find it at your local grocery store and pharmacy.

3. If you want better results, try boycotting dairy. See if that rids your skin of undesired friends.

Stop spending money on pricey over the counter ointments and get yourself hydrogen peroxide. Use this baby and wave sayonara to those pesky zits.
