Elizabeth Peyton – Jones first discovered the healing powers of food while she was sick in Russia. She asked her friend to bring her some pharmaceutical medication, but to Elizabeth’s bewilderment – her friend returned with a bag full with healthy foods.

“I thought she was joking, but she cooked up the most amazing healing dishes and brews and within a day the temperature had gone, and I felt better. Not just better, my body felt different – no side effects, no muzzy head, it was astonishing,” she says.

The experience led to Elizabeth changing her career and life. Now she’s a naturopath, master herbalist and author – healing the residents in London’s posh Kensington area and those who travel miles to hear her wisdom.

Have you always been interested in healthy eating and well-being? 

Growing up,  I was always told to eat everything I was given, and if I didn’t finish it, I was encouraged to think of the poor starving people in the world. I used to make up packages of food to send them! I never really connected food with health. Food was either fattening or slimming and not much in-between.

Did you ever ‘eat badly’ yourself?

I used to eat so badly I cringe now. I lived for a year with only a microwave to cook on and don’t think any fresh food passed my lips – it was all pre-packaged, high fat, high salt, and high sugar. I had no idea I need to drink water, so I just drank fizzy drinks to hydrate. I was completely unaware of what food can do to you.

How do you feel now, compared when you were in your 20s? 

Now I feel healthier, happier, focused, content, driven and good at what I do. In my 20s, my min would race and I would have enormous energy that frightened me and then none at all. I was unfocused and not sure what I was really good at.

What exercise do you do?

I stretch every morning at home pretty much religiously. I then do some kind of aerobic exercise – maybe jogging around the park, jumping on a rebounder at home, swimming or working on a ski-machine at home.

            The 5 Most Ageing Foods 

 MEAT – I’m talking about high-fat, processed, deep-fried, grilled or barbecued meats. These are acid-forming and can cause inflammation, irritated skin and wrinkles – decrease bone density, increase the risk of cancer, and stress the kidneys.

REFINED SUGAR – It’s addictive, ubiquitous and over-eaten. It causes mood disorders, loss of muscle tone, weight gain, spots and acne, tooth decay and disturbs hormones.

TABLE SALT – Sodium chloride (table salt) should be avoided as it causes acidity, damages bone health, thins hair, dries skin, and is associated with type 2 diabetes.

DAIRY – Cow’s milk can affect digestion, creating mucus, bloating, constipation and inflammation, cellulite, low energy, asthma, eczema, and joint pain. If you’re drinking milk for calcium and bone benefits, you’d be better off eating a cup of parsley a day.

BAD FATS – Trans-fats or animal based saturated fats can disrupt the functioning of every cell in your body. They cause the cell membranes to become less fluid, so they hold less water and nutrients, causing inflammation, acne, depression, joint pain, high blood pressure, sleeping difficulties and allergies.
