Why Can’t I Stop Eating?

By: Vivien Veil

Many foreigners abiding in London share a stereotypical view of Americans – they believe Americans are fat, lazy, and gluttonous.  Sadly, those people are unaware of what is really going on in the United States food supply.

In reality, Americans deserve more empathy from the rest of the world.  Giant American food corporations are waging a mental war against its fellow citizens.  Americans are the victims in this battle.  Companies like General Mills and PepsiCo covertly began attacking their brains, bodies and health.  (and no, I am not promoting a new zombie film)  These mega corporations are to blame for the raging food addiction sweeping the lives of countless Americans.

The average American is so addicted to processed food that the thought of giving it up makes them sweat.  99% of them would never give up their favorite comfort foods – that is how bad it has become.  It is not just Americans who are addicted – it is any country laden with fast food joints and cheap processed food.

The human population faces a very sinister and potentially life-threatening future.  Countless overweight and malnourished people walk the streets searching for junk food every day.  Obesity levels continue to rise.  Food addiction runs rampant like a ravenous wolf trying to kill its appetite.

Food industries across the world snatched our brains and hormones – tempting us to eat their highly addictive foods.  Disease and illness not only haunts the overweight, but it also attacks thin individuals.

Do you know a thin person who regularly eats junk food and never gains weight?  That slim person most likely believes they are healthy.  Little do they know that they harbor dangerous internal fat caused by eating a particular man-made sweetener.  Do not believe me?  Go to your nearest hospital and ask your doctor for an MRI scan.  MRI machines can easily detect the fat hiding inside your body.  This visceral fat loves to hug organs, such as your kidneys.  A slender junk food loving person can carry 4-5 liters of fat on their poor kidneys!  Diabetes and cardiovascular disease attacks both fat and thin people. It does not discriminate.

What is this man-made sweetener?

High Fructose Corn Syrup

A host of other names also impersonate high fructose corn syrup – depending on which continent you live.

Alternative Names:

  • Glucose Syrup
  • Fructose Syrup
  • Glucose
  • Fructose
  • High Fructose Maize Syrup
  • HFCS
  • Maize Syrup
  • Isoglucose
  • Corn Sugar
  • High Maltose Corn Syrup (High Fructose Corn Syrup’s Sneaky Cousin)

Presently, more and more people acknowledge the alarming side effects of ingesting high fructose corn syrup.  For this reason, The Corn Refiners Association pestered the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to let them call their beloved money making ingredient corn sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup in 2010.  The FDA denied their plea to deceive the public this year.  Now if they can only ban HFCS altogether.

Former US President Richard Nixon chats with Earl Butz in the Oval Office at the White House

History of High Fructose Corn Syrup in a Nutshell

“High fructose corn syrup has a sweet index of 120.  That is sweeter than sucrose.  Why do companies use more then?  The soft drink companies know that the sweeter they make it, the more people will buy their beverages.”

– Dr. Robert Lustig

High fructose corn syrup graced us with its presence in the early 1970s – back when the 37th President of the United States, Richard Nixon, ran the show.  Housewives and farmers staged a raucous protest against soaring food prices. Therefore, Nixon devised a plan to appease the masses.  He hired a snake by the name of Earl Butz to serve as Secretary of Agriculture in 1971.

The world is still paying for that horrendous decision.  What do you expect with a surname like Butz.  He took those poor American housewives and farmers for a ride on the bamboozle train!  Yes, Butz answered their pleas for cheaper food, but at a big price – their health.

Farms turned into mass production fields, churning out low-cost food.  Butz went all out with his motto “get big or get out.” The birth of industrial farms owes its roots to Mr. Earl Butz.  Suddenly, farmers needed cheap food to feed their cattle.  What was their golden ticket? You guessed it – Corn!

Corn also occupies the hearts of many other countries, e.g. United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia and Canada.  However, Americans seem to be more in love with corn.  The typical American meal consists of corn.  For example, let us examine the average meal combo: hamburger, chips (fries) and drink.  The farmers feed genetically modified (GM) corn to the cows (corn fed beef).  The bread contains high fructose corn syrup to extend its shelf life.  The chips are fried in corn oil.  The ketchup squirts out corn syrup.  The soft drink houses corn syrup.  Corn syrup is EVERYWHERE.

How Does High Fructose Corn Syrup Make You Fat?

“Some sugar will be converted to fat and some will not be converted to fat.  Fructose is one sugar that is easily converted to fat.  You can find fructose in table sugar and high fructose corn syrup.”

– Dr. Jean-Marc Schwarz

We all possess an essential hormone named leptin. This hormone tells your brain when to stop eating.  That, in turn makes you refuse those extra helpings of fried chicken wings.

Fructose blocks leptin from telling your brain that you are full.  It tricks your brain into thinking you are starving.  At the end, you are going through a brutal cycle of overeating, disease and addiction – which explains why the population is getting sicker and fatter.

What is High Fructose Corn Syrup?

A cheap man-made sweetener and preservative.  Many of your favorite processed foods and even some so called “natural” foods contain this artificial ingredient.  High fructose corn syrup is derived from genetically modified corn and then transformed into a toxic elixir.

Manufacturers love this addictive liquid because it is cheaper than table sugar – which means more profit for them!

How is this toxic elixir made?

Farmers create high fructose corn syrup by milling genetically modified corn to produce corn starch.  Next, they take the corn starch and convert it into corn syrup.  The farmers then transform the corn syrup’s glucose to fructose. Lastly, they mix the fructose with pure corn syrup.  The level of sweetness depends on how much fructose they utilize.

Who invented this stuff?

Richard O. Marshall and Earl R. Kooi introduced high fructose corn syrup in 1957.  However, their attempts to produce it on a grand scale proved futile. Enter Dr. Yoshiyuki Takasaki, a top-notch Japanese government scientist.  Dr. Takasaki magically concocted the HFCS poison in Japan from 1965-1970.

HFCS made its way into American processed foods and soft drinks by 1975.  By the 1980s, it emerged as the number one substitute for sugar.

The only benefit of eating this stuff is that you will one day be able to give a lot of money to the medical establishment.

Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup

“First off, high fructose corn syrup comes from genetically modified corn.  You can get chronic allergies from your apple sauce if it contains HFCS.  You give that to your child, and 20 minutes later, your child will be hungry again.  HFCS pushes your hormone leptin out of your body.  It confuses and tricks your brain into thinking you are hungry. It is causing an obesity epidemic.”

– Dr. Bob DeMaria

You’ve made me scared! Tell me which products have this toxin!

Do you hate cooking from scratch?  Love junk food?  Can’t get enough of sugar? If you answered yes to one of those questions,  you will be thrilled to know that many of your beloved items in your pantry and fridge contain this nasty chemical.

High fructose corn syrup lives in processed food, yogurt, drinks, candy, frozen foods, ice cream, processed meats, canned fruit, ketchup, salad dressing, syrup, cake mixes, canned vegetables, sauces, apple sauce, soups, baked goods, nutrition bars, breakfast cereals, candy bars, etc.  As you can see, it is everywhere.

Get in a habit of checking every food label when you go grocery shopping.  Try and cook most of your meals at home using fresh ingredients.  Yes, it is time consuming, but at least you will be feeding yourself and your loved ones non-toxic food.  Eat more natural whole foods instead of processed junk.  Most important tip: Please stay away from fast foods restaurants!

You will feel much better once you stop eating this poison.  Oh, and do not be surprised if you start losing weight once HFCS is out of your body.

I love how you laid this out. Thank you so much! Many clients come to me and are confused when I say that the 100 calorie packs, or bottled tea, or other diet foods are actually keeping them in the addiction. It’s all quite sad really. So, we need more of this out there! thanks!

mrs. obama said she wants the USA to be better in eating habits? then lets get this product out of our foods!!!!!! really lets start cooking from scratch again and stop buying items with this HFCS …can we do it? I think we can, i know the cooks at home also work and conveniece foods are just that..qucik and easy as we worked all day…but on weekends you can prepare ahead foods to warm in the oven by freezing your own dinners. i bet if we did not buy the foods containing the HFCS’s for one week the makers of food products containing HFCS would feel the effects in their wallets!!!!! but our health would be better and we would even feel better. lets not buy meats unless they are grass fed or natural fed animals, i want to feel good not bad. i feel alot of those affects listed above. i want to feel better so guess i will be eating nothing with the HFCS listed in its ingredients….

  8. Ok some good points about HFCS, but to start with HFCS is not the same as Fructose or Glucose, HFCS is derived from corn through enzimatic process or hydrolysation, To describe fructose corn syrup or high fructose glucose syrup as the same as Fructose or glucose is plain wrong,

In the UK if you labelled HFCS as fructose or glucose you would be in trouble as the food labelling regs clearly state that a sugar ingredient should be described as it would be described if someone were to it purchase themselves on its own.

We all need glucose as part of our respiration and metabolism, without it we would be dead. but I have to agree that it is not necessary in the quantities that we consume today. Fructose is fruit sugar and found naturally in fruits and honey. As for the mercury that is an impurity that is imparted to HFCS through industrial processes and is unacceptable and has tight laws governing impurities in most EU countries.

so in summary Fructose and Glucose on their own are not the devil, HFCS are potentially worse as they are obtained through industrial processes and the resultant compounds produced might not match those in nature (although I’m no expert), and the addition of impurities is in food is not something new, but it should not be tolerated.

like the saying goes ‘all things in moderation’

Don’t eat that processed crap, learn to cook and try and eat raw food, uncooked fresh fruit and veg as much as possible.

  9. imawakeru says:

I don’t understand a government to intent on protecting us from ourselves, but yet food producers, suppliers are allowed to put all the toxins that they put into our foods. This is where government should step in. Stop monitoring us, and start monitoring the real enemies of the people.

  10. Justin says:

The damage is done, so I guess I’ll have to now repair the damage I’ve caused to myself and my family. I grew up eating all those foods listed in your article. I think I’m addicted to those foods too. Never understood why until now. Eternally grateful Vivien.

  11. Lila says:

We consumers are helping these companies get richer and costing millions of dollars in health issues.
    Mortal rates higher and higher.

  12. Very well written and so easy to understand! It is interesting to notice the names of companies that use HFCS…the big guns: Kraft, Kelloggs, Betty Crocker, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Quaker, Yoplait….If people could bring themselves to stop buying these products and actually make an impact on their profits, that would bring about a real CHANGE! In the meantime, read labels and cook your own meals as much as possible. Only YOU can control what goes in your mouth and it is your choice alone.
